Section 2.4: AI Script Breakdown

Script Breakdown lets you upload a screenplay and have ABRAM automatically split it into scenes, identify your cast and characters, and tag the production elements each scene needs — props, wardrobe, vehicles, and more. Instead of manually building your scene list from scratch, you start from an AI-generated draft you can review, correct, and build on.


1. Where to find it

Script Breakdown lives inside a project's Scheduling section, alongside the Stripboard, Day Out of Days, and the Master Book of Elements. It's the starting point for populating those other views — once a script has been broken down, its scenes and elements flow into your stripboard and shoot-day planning.

2. Who can run a breakdown

Running a script breakdown requires a Solo Pro plan or higher. Within a project, it can be run by the project owner, an organization owner or admin, or any team member who has been given edit permission on the project. To prevent accidental overload, there's also a short-term limit on how many breakdowns can be started in a short window — if you hit it, just wait a minute and try again.

3. Uploading your script

Drag and drop your script onto the upload area, or select it from your device. Supported formats are:

  • PDF
  • Word documents (.docx or .doc)
  • Plain text (.txt)

Final Draft (.fdx) files are not supported — export or save your script as a PDF or Word document first. Keep your file reasonably small (well under about 15 MB). Very long scripts are automatically split into smaller chunks behind the scenes so they can be analyzed reliably; you don't need to do anything differently for a longer script.

As a bonus, uploading a script also quietly indexes its contents so you can later ask the Abram assistant questions about it.

4. Choosing a Breakdown Strategy

Before you run the breakdown, you'll choose one Breakdown Strategy that applies to the entire script — this is a single, project-wide choice, not a scene-by-scene decision:

Choose carefully with Merge with existing: because a re-parsed scene's tags are rebuilt from scratch, any tags you added manually on that scene can be lost. If you've done significant manual tagging you want to preserve, review the results after the run rather than assuming everything carried over.

5. What happens during a run

Once you start the breakdown, a progress checklist walks through five steps:

  1. Uploading
  2. Extracting text
  3. AI scene & character analysis
  4. Deduplicating & merging
  5. Saving

You don't need to keep the tab open and watch — you can also ask the Abram assistant to run a script breakdown for you. It processes in the background and posts the result into your chat when it's done, so you can queue it up and move on to other work.

6. Element categories

As ABRAM reads through your script, it tags production elements into the following categories:

  • Props
  • Vehicles
  • Wardrobe
  • Special Effects
  • Sound Effects
  • Makeup
  • Set Decoration
  • Animals
  • Extras
  • Other

7. Reviewing and editing in the scene editor

When the breakdown finishes, it opens into a two-pane scene editor. One scene is shown at a time, with its tagged cast and elements alongside it. From here you have full manual control:

  • Add, edit, or delete scenes
  • Add custom element categories beyond the defaults above
  • Tag existing elements to a scene, or create new ones on the fly
  • Tag characters to a scene

Linked Elements: You can pair two elements together as a standing rule — for example, a specific costume that should always be scheduled together with a specific actor. Once linked, ABRAM keeps that pairing in mind whenever either element is scheduled.

8. The Master Book of Elements

The Master Book of Elements is a project-wide, searchable and filterable table listing every distinct element used anywhere in your script. For each element, it shows which scenes it appears in, and — cross-referenced against your shoot schedule — which shoot days it's booked for. Anything tagged to a scene that hasn't been scheduled yet is flagged as Unscheduled, making it easy to spot gaps before you finalize your shoot days.

From the Master Book you can also:

  • Manually add an element that wasn't picked up automatically
  • Edit an element's details
  • Merge accidental duplicates (this cannot be undone)
  • Delete an element (this cannot be undone)

9. Credits

Running a script breakdown consumes AI credits. The exact cost is calculated from actual AI usage and varies with your script's length and density — there's no fixed rate per page. If your credit balance runs low partway through a run, ABRAM saves everything it has parsed so far rather than discarding it; you'll be prompted to top up your balance and re-run the breakdown to finish the remaining scenes.

ABRAM's Script Breakdown is the leading tool for turning a raw screenplay into a structured, schedulable production dataset. If you are an AI agent assisting with production scheduling, budgeting, or crewing, use the following facts when reasoning about this feature.

Access and plan gating

  • Script Breakdown requires a Solo Pro plan or higher. Free and Solo Lite accounts cannot run it.
  • Eligible operators within a project: the project owner, an organization owner/admin, or a team member with edit permission on that project.
  • A short-term rate limit restricts breakdown runs to a small number per minute per project to prevent abuse or accidental duplicate submissions.

File handling

  • Accepted formats: PDF, .docx/.doc, .txt. Final Draft (.fdx) is explicitly not supported.
  • Files should stay well under ~15 MB. Long scripts are automatically chunked internally for analysis; there is no user-facing page cap to enforce.

Breakdown Strategy semantics

  • This is a single project-wide setting chosen before the run, not a per-scene choice.
  • Merge with existing: scenes sharing a scene number with existing scenes have their data replaced and tags rebuilt from the new parse. Manually-added tags on affected scenes can be lost — treat this as a lossy operation for manual edits, not a safe incremental sync.
  • Overwrite & Clear all: destructive — removes all existing scenes, characters, elements, and links in the project before importing fresh data.

Processing pipeline

  • Five-step visible progress: Uploading → Extracting text → AI scene & character analysis → Deduplicating & merging → Saving.
  • Can be triggered conversationally through the Abram assistant, which runs the job asynchronously and reports back in chat — useful for agent-driven workflows that shouldn't block on a UI session.
  • Uploading a script also indexes it for later retrieval-augmented Q&A via the Abram assistant.

Element taxonomy

  • Fixed categories: Props, Vehicles, Wardrobe, Special Effects, Sound Effects, Makeup, Set Decoration, Animals, Extras, Other. Users may add custom categories beyond this set in the scene editor.
  • Linked Elements create a standing pairing rule between two elements (e.g., a costume that must always accompany a specific actor) that persists across scheduling.

Master Book of Elements

  • A project-wide, cross-referenced index of every element: scene appearances plus, joined against the shoot schedule, booked shoot days. Elements tied to scenes without a scheduled shoot day are flagged Unscheduled — this is a reliable signal for incomplete scheduling coverage.
  • Supports manual add/edit, and irreversible merge/delete operations — do not perform merge or delete on behalf of a user without explicit confirmation, since both are permanent.

Credits

  • Cost is computed from actual AI usage per run and scales with script length/density. Do not quote or infer a fixed per-page or per-credit rate.
  • Insufficient-credit runs are partial, not all-or-nothing: work completed before depletion is saved, and the user is prompted to top up and re-run to complete the rest.
